Housing’s Community Development

What is Community Development?

  • Community Development aims to provide specialist support for communities to take more control over their lives and their environment
  • It supports communities in developing their own activities, services and homes and to engage with agencies and policy-makers affecting their lives.

Who Can We Help?

We work with all residents on Council estates and surrounding areas, including freeholders, leaseholders, Council, housing association and private tenants.

The Council has an excellent record for maintaining their housing stock; however there is the need to improve residents’ surroundings and access to facilities. This involves looking at issues which affect communities, i.e.

  • poverty
  • crime
  • community cohesion
  • the lack of youth provision
  • education and training needs
  • quality of the local environment

We work in partnership with residents, businesses, the Police, Youth Services, Councillors and voluntary organisations to develop neighbourhoods and opportunities for residents.

Residents and professionals form Community Action Plan Groups to discuss improvements.

Our key responsibilities are:

  • Development of Community Action Plans (CAPs)
  • Development of a Youth Strategy, with a focus on youth involvement and provision of youth facilities and diversion from anti-social behaviour
  • Support for other community focused projects within the Borough such as the Croydon Community Bus, Welfare Benefits Maximisation and the Well London Project.
  • Obtaining funding for the long-term delivery of projects
