Campaign for more police
Do you want to see more police officers on Croydon’s streets? Back our petition- we need your support!

Croydon Council has launched a petition to get more police officers on Croydon’s streets, helping to fight crime and antisocial behaviour.

We are lobbying the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to increase the number of police officers allocated to Croydon.

We need as many residents and businesses as possible to back the initiative by signing a petition, which we will present to the Mayor on behalf of the people of Croydon.

The case for more police in Croydon

We have produced a report which you can download and read making our case for more police officers which will be presented to the mayor along with the petition.

Cllr Gavin Barwell, cabinet member for safety, said: “We believe we have a strong case for more police officers. Croydon has only been allocated the eighth highest number of police officers in London - far less than other boroughs with significantly less crime. We are a huge retail centre and a major transport hub, with one of the largest night time economies in the capital outside of the west end. The borough needs a strong local police force to handle these challenges and the current Metropolitan Police Resource Allocation Formula simply does not provide us with enough manpower.”

During Operation Safe for All, between October 2008 and March 2009, the Metropolitan Police Service allocated Croydon additional police officers from the Territorial Support Group.

The result was significant reductions in serious youth violence (19.5 per cent reduction), knife enabled crime (36 per cent reduction), and robbery (15 per cent reduction).

Cllr Barwell said:  “Our local police do a fantastic job and the council’s relationship with them is excellent.  With extra resources on a permanent basis, we know we can drive down crime in our borough.

“We know you want to see more police officers on our streets. Get behind our initiative and help us make it happen. Tell your friends, tell your neighbours – the more signatures we have, the more likely we are to succeed. ”

We will keep you updated on this initiative through this webpage so please log on to see how it’s going.
