Here are some simple rules to help you keep safe when handling fireworks or lighting bonfires. Use the links to the right for further safety information and details of firework displays in Croydon.
Firework safety
- Only buy fireworks that conform to British Standards - they should have BS 7114 written on the box
- Don't drink alcohol then set off fireworks
- Keep fireworks in a closed box
- Keep the box well away from fire and cigarettes
- Follow the instructions on each firework carefully
- Light fireworks at arm's length, using a taper
- Stand well back once you have lit the firework
- Never go near a firework that has been lit and has not gone off
- Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
- Always supervise children around fireworks
- Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
- Never give sparklers to children under five years old
- Keep all pets indoors

- Don't put bonfires near buildings
- Don't build dens inside a bonfire
- Don't use petrol to light a bonfire
- Don't put aerosols or bottles on bonfires
- Don't throw fireworks onto a bonfire
