What do Neighbourhood Wardens do?
Housing Neighbourhood Wardens support local communities by:
- getting to know residents
- helping to develop a community spirit
- building up trust and engaging positively with young people
- working to reduce crime, fear of crime and improve community safety
- caring for the environment by reporting abandoned vehicles, graffiti, fly-tipping and damage to communal facilities
Wardens are not police officers and they have no direct enforcement powers but they will:
- patrol the neighbourhood on foot and by bike wearing their uniforms
- observe and report problems
- get to know local people and shopkeepers and meet new tenants
- support vulnerable residents of all ages including victims of crime or harassment
- work to gain trust between residents, the council and groups and agencies providing community services
- listen to young and elderly people and get involved in activities
What sorts of problems will they respond to and report?
- fear of crime and safety in and around your home
- anti-social behaviour
- abandoned and untaxed vehicles
- damage to street furniture and public lighting
- fly-tipping and drug debris
- graffiti
- damage to communal areas
- security risks of property
How can they help me?
By offering:
- support
- information about local services
- witness evidence gathering if you are experiencing harassment or anti-social behaviour
All wardens wear a distinctive burgundy uniform which bears the council logo, and they carry identification photographs.
