Registration of deaths and stillbirths
- Registering a death

- Registering a stillbirth

An appointment is necessary to register a stillbirth. When you come to the Register Office, our staff will treat you with sensitivity and sympathy and will do their utmost to minimise any distress.
If the stillbirth occurred in Croydon, it must be registered by the Croydon Register Office. You may register a stillbirth at any register office in England or Wales. The details will then be forwarded to us and we will register the stillbirth and send you the registration documents. However, if you register it in a district other than where the stillbirth took place, it can slow down the registration process significantly. People normally wish to complete the formalities and make funeral arrangements as soon as possible.
Please note that the stillbirth must be registered within three months of when it occurred.
Who can register a stillbirth?
- the mother
- the father, if he was married to the mother at the time of the stillbirth
- a person present at the stillbirth (please check with the register office for qualified informants).
If the parents are not married, the father must attend the registration if he wishes his name to go in the register.
What to bring with you to the appointment
- date and place of stillbirth
- the full name of the baby (you may, but do not have to, give the baby a forename)
- the form from the medical practitioner or midwife who was present at the stillbirth (the medical certificate of stillbirth)
- the parents' full names, including maiden name/s if applicable (the father cannot register this on his own unless the parents are married)
- the date and place of birth of each parent
- the occupation of each parent
- usual address of each parent
- date of marriage, if married
- the informant's full name and address, if someone other than one of the parents is registering.
You will be provided with a certificate of registration for which there is no charge. You may purchase a full certificate of stillbirth for £3.50.
