Birth - historical searches
The Register Office holds records relating to births, deaths and marriages in Croydon dating back to 1837.
You may apply for a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate by post or in person (there is no need to make an appointment).
To obtain a copy of a person's birth certificate you will need the person's:
- full name at birth
- date of birth
- place of birth (hospital/home address)
- mother's full name (including maiden name if possible)
- father's full name (if possible).
A full certificate costs £7.00 while a short certificate is £5.50 (a full certificate would be needed to, for example, apply for a passport).
Fees
Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to 'Croydon Council'. Cheque-guarantee card details, such as card number and expiry date, are also required.
If applying by post please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope and your phone number.
If applying from outside the UK you will need to send an international money order drawn on a British bank in pounds sterling. Note: we are not able to accept Canadian postal orders.
