Situated in the north of the borough, Queen's Road Cemetery was the original cemetery for the people of Croydon. Opened in 1861, the graves are shaded by large trees and landscaped with shrubbery beds. The cemetery grounds cover approximately 24 acres.
The cemetery has about 50,000 graves, but no new burial plots are currently available.
Burials may take place in family graves, with the permission of the owner of the grave.
Although no new burial plots are available, there is the option of purchasing a reclaimed grave or reclaimed cremated remains grave. A leaflet giving details of reclaimed graves or reclaimed cremated remains graves is available from the crematorium office on request.
Reclaimed graves - these are old graves used over 75 years ago and in which further burial space exists. Graves can be selected for a new 50 year period for one or two burials. None of the previous deeper burials will be disturbed. The right to place a memorial varies from 30 to 50 years, depending on the safety of the chosen design. Temporary edgings or surrounds can be placed prior to the purchase of a memorial.
Reclaimed cremated remains graves - each of these is one half of an old grave, which was used over 75 years ago. The grave is sold for a 50 year term in which up to four caskets can be interred. Memorials are restricted to small headstone designs placed on a slab base and, if desired, a small garden area can be provided above the interred caskets. Temporary edgings or surrounds can be placed prior to the purchase of a memorial.
