Croydon cemetery and crematorium

Croydon Crematorium was opened in 1937 and with approximately 2,000 cremations per year has carried out over 150,000 cremations in total. It can be accessed from either Thornton Road (A23) or Mitcham Road (A236); both entrances lead to the large crematorium car park and office. Cremation services occur Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm at 45 minute intervals and on Saturday from 9.30am to 11.45am.

The crematorium has two chapels. The West Chapel has a traditional design, seats about 80 people on wooden pews and has a catafalque that descends upon committal. The East Chapel is more contemporary in design and will seat about 130 in linked padded seats; allowing the seating arrangement to be adjusted, if necessary. At the point of committal a choice of two curtains close to either fully or partially obscure the coffin, or if preferred, the curtains can be left open. These chapels are adjacent to the large car park; directions to which are signposted throughout the grounds.

The cemetery and crematorium grounds are maintained in partnership with Ground-Control Ltd.

Mitcham Road Cemetery was awarded the 2011/2012 Green Flag Award, for the third successive year; given in recognition of achieving the national standard for parks and green spaces. Mitcham Road Cemetery and Croydon Crematorium also received a "Winner of Special Awards for Innovation 2011" accolade from Green Flag, a gold award in 2011, 2012 and again in 2013 from London in Bloom.

Mitcham Road Cemetery is a late Victorian cemetery, first opened in 1897. It is a flat site covering approximately 43 acres and has extensive areas of old memorials; many of which have been laid flat prior to our existing memorial safety and improvement programme.

Although no new burial plots are available, there is the option of purchasing a reclaimed grave or reclaimed cremated remains grave. A leaflet giving details of reclaimed graves or reclaimed cremated remains graves is available from the crematorium office on request.

Reclaimed Graves - these are old graves used over 75 years ago and in which further burial space exists. Graves can be purchased for a new 50 year period for one or two burials. None of the previous deeper burials will be disturbed. The right to place a memorial varies from 30 to 50 years, depending on the safety of the chosen design. Temporary edgings or surrounds can be placed prior to the purchase of a memorial.

Reclaimed Cremated Remains Graves - each of these is one half of an old grave, which was used over 75 years ago. The grave is sold for a 50 year term in which up to four caskets can be interred. Memorials are restricted to small headstone designs placed on a slab base and, if desired, a small garden area can be provided above the interred caskets. Temporary edgings or surrounds can be placed prior to the purchase of a memorial.

Book of Remembrance

These are beautiful hand made books with inscriptions and illustrations completed individually by an artist. Floral emblems, badges and personal artwork can be added. The entries are viewed on the anniversary and as this memorial is in perpetuity it will never need to be renewed.

Croydon's book of remembrance can now be viewed online.
