Social economy

Croydon Council has five years experience of supporting social economy projects in the borough. Social Enterprises are not-for-profit ventures trading in goods or services that benefit the local community. There are many examples, co-operatives, credit unions, community businesses and social firms.  Many are small, micro enterprises or entrepreneurs with innovative ideas.

One example is the Croydon Rickshaw Co-operative that is being piloted in Croydon. The Croydon Rickshaw Co-operative began two years ago. They own two pedal and battery powered rickshaws that transport people very short distances, less than 1km, between shops, taxis, trams, buses, trains and car parks in Croydon. The Rickshaw Co-operative trains and employs local unemployed people, so that they can make a fair wage locally, and increase trade for all, by connecting customers with their preferred onward transport.
