Procurement policy
Environmentally preferable products have less of a negative effect on human health and the environment than other products serving the same purpose. Raw materials used in manufacture, durability, adaptability, distribution, re-use, operation, maintenance, packaging and disposal should all be considered when choosing products.
We are committed to sustainable development. This commitment is firmly grounded in our community strategy (2003-2006) and green commitment policy. The green commitment recognises that Croydon Council, as the largest service provider in the borough and a massive user of goods and services, is in a unique position to have a positive impact on the regional, national and global environment. Procurement can play an important role in reducing environmental impacts and working towards sustainability through the products and services we choose.
Our green commitment policy, adopted in 1999, states that we will "use our investments and purchasing power to promote environmental sustainability".
To achieve this, we issued our own 'environmental procurement policy and supplementary guidance' in December 2002, and signed the mayor's environmental procurement code in April 2003. Our environmental procurement policy commits us to optimising the environmental benefits of procurement decisions in line with the principle of value for money, and to use our purchasing power to promote environmental sustainability, when choosing products and contracting services.
