How to pay your business rates

  • direct debit through your bank or building society account (We strongly recommend payment by direct debit. It is the most efficient and secure way to pay and is guaranteed by the bank or building society)
  • cheque or postal order through the post
  • BACS payment
  • at PayPoint outlets
  • payment in person
  • online via this website
  • credit/debit card by phoning 020 8667 8385.

Payment by direct debit

Direct debit is the easiest and cheapest method of making payment, both for you and us, as it reduces administration costs thereby helping to keep everyone's bill down.

When you agree to pay by direct debit, you are automatically covered by the direct debit guarantee.

If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change, we will notify you at least 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed.

If an error is made by the council or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.

You can cancel a direct debit at any time, by writing to your bank or building society.

If you would like to pay your business rates by direct debit, download the form below, print it off and complete and send it to the address printed on the form.

By phone

You can make a debit or credit card payment for your business rates by phoning 020 8667 8385. Remember to have your business rates account reference number with you when you phone.

At Paypoint outlets

You can pay your business rates by cash only at any outlet displaying the Paypoint logo. To make payment you will need to take your business rates payment slip, which will be printed with a barcode.

You can use the associated link at right to find your nearest Paypoint outlet.

If you wish to use a Paypoint outlet and your payment slip does not have a barcode please contact us at the address below.

Payments by post

Where payment is made by post, please ensure that you quote your business rates account reference number. If you require a receipt for your payment please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Payment should be made to the address shown on this page.

Please write your account reference on the reverse of the cheque and allow at least three days for second class post. Please do not send cash through the post.

BACS transfer from your bank

Please contact the business rates section for advice if you wish to pay using this method.

Please note that our cash offices at Fell Road, Croydon, at Strand House, Thornton Heath, and in Central Parade, New Addington, are now closed.

Instalments

Businesses are given 10 monthly instalments to pay their business rates. The instalments are due on the fifth day of the month, from April through January. If you move into new premises during the current financial year your bill will be split over the number of months that are left up to January.

You can also choose to pay your bill in one or two instalments instead of ten. If this is the case, please let us know and we will arrange it.

Queries regarding bills

If you think that we have calculated your bill incorrectly contact us immediately and we will check your account. If there is an error we will correct it and issue you with a new bill. If the problem is more involved, we will write to you with a full explanation, or telephone you if this is more convenient.

If you have any queries about payments please contact us.
