Trading standards - weights and measures
Trading standards staff visit all types of retail businesses to check that any weighing or measuring equipment used to sell goods to the public as well as any equipment used by wholesalers, importers or manufacturers is working correctly.
Typically this includes testing scales used in shops, market stalls, supermarkets, butchers and grocers. Petrol and diesel pumps are also checked as well as the metre rules used to sell electric cable and wire. The spirit measures and glasses used in pubs and restaurants are also checked for accuracy.
We also investigate complaints relating to short weight or measure. These may relate to pre-packaged goods or those weighed and measured in front of the customer.
