Roads and highways - flooding (drains and gullies)
Drainage systems along roads should be capable of removing water efficiently from the surface of the highway to provide a safe passage for all vehicles and pedestrians. A drainage system generally consists of road gullies connected to either surface water sewers or soakaways. It is necessary to keep them clean and well-maintained so that they can work properly.
Even when they are clean and well maintained, problems can occur. Often it will be when the amount of water arriving on the road is greater than the capacity of the drainage facilities that take it away. This may arise when:
- there is exceptional rainfall
- a road is in a low-lying area
- there are changes in 'run off' from adjacent fields, and
- rivers overflow.
Material carried into the drains by floods can also lead to them becoming blocked. This can include mud and leaves.
We aim to keep the gullies on the highways clear and free from blockages and keep the Borough's 2,000 miles of public sewers and drains properly maintained and cleaned.
Reports relating to the failure of this system causing flooding problems on the highway should be reported to the number below.
Flooding from public sewers
To report an overflowing public sewer, you should call Thames Water on 0845 9200800.
Flooding from private sewers or drains
If your private drains or sewers are overflowing, see the link on drain blockages - guidance for householders.
Flooding from a burst water main
Croydon has two water supply companies: Thames Water and Sutton & East Surrey. Please refer to your water bill to see who to contact if the burst water main is in your area. The water company is responsible for the supply up to and including the water stopcock.
Flooding from a water service pipe or internal pipe work
This is the responsibility of the homeowner or landlord and would need the attention of a plumber (see "Yellow Pages" or similar directories). If you are a council tenant, contact the Housing department on the number below.
Flooding from rivers and watercourses
See the land drainage section.
