Direct debit
We recommend that you pay your council tax by direct debit because it is the easiest way. It is also the only payment method that gives you a choice of payment dates - choose to pay on the 1st, 5th, 15th or 25th of the month. You must pay by the 5th of the month for all other payment methods.
How to set up a direct debit
The quickest way to set up a direct debit is online (see the 'Council tax direct debit instruction' link at right). Alternatively, you can phone us on the number at the bottom of this page and give us your bank account details over the phone.
If you prefer to fill in a direct debit form you can download a copy of the form at the bottom of the page, complete it and send it to the address on the form.
Online payments by debit or credit card
You can pay your council tax online using the 'Council tax payment' link at right.
By phone
You can make a debit or credit card payment for your council tax through our automated telephone service. Please phone 0845 606 6683 to make a payment. Remember to have your council tax account reference number ready when you phone.
At PayPoint outlets
You can pay your council tax by cash only at any outlet displaying the PayPoint logo. To make payment you will need your council tax payment slip, which will be printed with a barcode, or a council tax swipecard.
If you wish to use a PayPoint outlet and your payment slip does not have a barcode please contact us at the address below.
See the 'associated' link at right to find your nearest PayPoint outlet.
At the Post Office
You can pay at any post office if you have a council tax swipecard. To get a swipecard contact us at the address below.
It can take up to two weeks for delivery of your swipecard when you first apply. However, you are still required to make your payments on time during this period. This means you will have to pay by a different method until your swipecard arrives.
Please note that as it can take up to seven days for your payment to reach us if you are paying at a post office, you should make your payment at least seven days in advance of the due date.
At a bank
You can pay at a bank counter (although a fee may be charged by the bank for this service). To do this you will need a bank giro credit slip. Cheques should be made payable to 'Croydon Council' and you should write your council tax account reference on the back.
Please note that as it can take up to seven days for your payment to reach us if you are paying at a bank, you should make your payment at least seven days in advance of the due date.
By post
Cheques should be made payable to 'Croydon Council' and sent to the address below. Please write your council tax account reference on the back of the cheque and remember to include your payment slip with your cheque. Do not send cash through the post.
Please note that as it can take up to seven days for your payment to reach us if you are paying by post, you should make your payment at least seven days in advance of the due date.
