What happens when you are unable to pay your council tax?
- Reminder notices

- Summons notices

- Visits from bailiffs

We aim to help you as much as we can if you are having genuine difficulties paying your council tax. We will make sure we apply any discounts you are entitled to receive.
When to pay
If you receive a letter from us requesting payment, you must send the full amount within 14 days of the date shown at the top of the letter.
As long as we receive payment within this period no further recovery action will be taken against you and no further costs will be applied.
What happens if you don't pay
If you owe council tax and are not eligible for any discounts, we must be fair to everyone who pays council tax by collecting the money that is owed via a summons notice.
As long as we receive the requested full amount before the date of the hearing, no further recovery action will be taken against you. You will not incur further costs.
See the 'How to pay your council tax' link at left for details about how to make a payment. When making a payment in person, please remember to bring your payment voucher with you.
What to do if you are unable to pay
If you are having difficulties paying the full payment, you must contact our tax department with your proposed payment arrangement. All payment arrangements must be made with the agreement of the council.
As a general rule, all council tax is payable by monthly instalments and each payment must be large enough to ensure that any arrears are cleared over 12 weeks (or three calendar months).
To make a payment proposal write to the council tax department, quoting your council tax reference number, at the address below.
Alternatively, you can make a payment arrangement online via the 'Council Tax arrangement request' link in "Do it online" at right.
You do not need to attend court if you have agreed a payment arrangement.
What to do if you disagree with the summons
If you disagree with the issue of the summons, you must write to us immediately (see address below), clearly detailing your reasons. Please include your full name and address as well as the council tax reference number shown on the summons notice.
Please do not ignore the summons as this will lead to further action being taken against you and further costs being added to the amount you owe.
