Council tax - reductions
There are a number of council tax reductions you can claim depending upon the circumstances of your property and the personal circumstances of the people living there.
These reductions include:
- exemptions, where there is no charge to pay for a particular day
- discounts, worth 10%, 25% or 50%
- disabled relief if an extra room is needed by a person with a disability, if a person uses a wheelchair indoors or if the dwelling has certain features that are essential or of major importance to the well-being of the disabled person
- council tax benefit if the council tax payer is on a low income
- second adult rebate if the other adults living with the council tax payer are on a low income.
We take into account a number of factors when deciding whether you qualify for any of these discounts or reductions. First, we have to know whether your property is occupied or unoccupied.
If your property is occupied, whether you can get a reduction depends on:
- the number of adults living in the property
- the personal circumstances of these people.
If your property is unoccupied, whether you can get a reduction depends on:
- whether the property is furnished or unfurnished
- the length of time that it has been unoccupied
- the reason why it is unoccupied.
You can find out more about discounts and exemptions by clicking on the page links at the top of this page.
What happens if I qualify for more than one reduction?
The rules on whether you can get more than one reduction at the same time are complicated. It is, in fact, possible that a person may qualify for more than one reduction yet only receive one of these at the time.
If you think you may qualify for more than one reduction, you should apply for all of the reductions for which you think you may qualify. If we decide that you qualify for more than one reduction but can only give you one of these, we will give you the reduction that makes you better off.
