London Borough of Croydon

What happens when the council tax payer dies?

This exemption starts on the day that the Council Tax payer died. It does not cover any time before their death.

You must contact us as soon as possible after the person dies so that we can send you the correct council tax bill. Our contact details are below.

Does paying the outstanding bill mean that no more money has to be paid for the council tax?

No. This may not be the final bill. The executor or administrator of a deceased person's estate will have to make further council tax payments if the exemption from the council tax for the property ends. This will happen if the property is still in their hands six months after probate or the letters of administration have been granted.

It is important that you tell us when any of the following events happen so that we can send you an amended bill as quickly as possible:

  • someone moves into the property
  • probate is granted or you get the letters of administration for the deceased person's estate
  • the tenancy is ended and the property is returned to the landlord
  • the property is sold
  • someone inherits the property
  • you move the furniture out of the property.
