Appeals on Discounts Exemptions Liability

How to ask us to review our decision

If you have new evidence or information that you think will change our decision then you should write to us and ask us to review our decision. Put in your letter that you want a 'review' of our decision and tell us why you want the decision changed. You must send in the new evidence or information with your letter.

How to appeal about our decision

If you have no new evidence or information but you think that our decision is wrong because you think that we have misinterpreted the law, then you can appeal against our decision. Put in your letter that you want to 'appeal' against our decision and describe to us the reason why you think our decision is wrong in law.

What you can do if your appeal is turned down but you still disagree with our decision

If you have already made an appeal to us but we have turned down your appeal and you still disagree with our decision then you can appeal to an independent body called the Valuation Tribunal. However, you must make your appeal to the Valuation Tribunal within 2 months of the day on which the council sent you a letter telling you the result of your original appeal. You cannot make an appeal to the Valuation Tribunal if you have not yet made an appeal to the council.

Do I have to pay my Council Tax if I am waiting for a decision on my review or my appeal?

Yes. You must continue to pay your Council Tax while you wait for a decision on your appeal. It is very important that you continue to pay your Council Tax because, if you do not pay, the council can take recovery action against you such as sending a summons or sending your debt to bailiffs.

If you have asked for a reduction in your bill and your appeal is successful then we will send you a new Council Tax bill. The instalments on your new bill will take into account the payments that you have already made.

If you have appealed because you believe that your name should not be on the Council Tax bill then, if your appeal is successful, we will contact you about the payments you have made.
