What is housing benefit?
Housing benefit is paid by the council and is based on the level of rent, your income, savings and personal circumstances and those living in your house.
You can claim housing benefit even if you do not receive any other benefits.
Council, housing association or private sector tenants
You can claim housing benefit whether you pay your rent to the council, a housing association or a private landlord.
You can also claim if you are a lodger, a sub-tenant or if you live in a hostel.
Property owners with mortgages
You cannot claim housing benefit if you own your property and need help paying your mortgage.
You will need to contact the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) for help with your mortgage.
