Who can claim council tax benefit?
You can claim council tax benefit if:
- you are the person named on the council tax bill
- the property is your main residence.
You may be entitled to money off your council tax bill if you qualify for a discount or an exemption.
Claiming other benefits
You do not need to be on state benefits to claim council tax benefit. People on low incomes can also apply.
You can also claim council tax benefit if you already get a discount on your bill. For example, if you live alone.
Who cannot claim council tax benefit?
You cannot claim Council Tax Benefit if:
- you are not the person named on the council tax bill
- the property is not your main residence
- you or your partner have capital of £16,000 or more (unless you or your partner receives a pension credit). This includes money in bank and building society accounts, investments, cash and property
- you are a full-time student in higher education, unless you fall into one of these categories:
- a lone parent
- disabled
- under 19 following a further (not higher) education course
- aged 60 or more
- you are not entitled to benefits because of your immigration status in the UK.
